Have you ever wanted to see Valhalla, with the torches and dark stone…yet still want to relax? Let’s visit one of my favorite spas in the world.

Drottningtorget Spa

You definitely should visit Gotenburg in Sweden during summer solstice. The entire city is a party of happiness and inclusion. Daylight lasts roughly 23 hours. It’s a major party. But if you go underground, you enter a world of dark stone, hot tubs, torches, pools, waterfalls and every conceivable way to say ‘ahhh’ after that long flight.

Welcome to the Drottningtorget Spa.

The Massaging Pools

Begin in the warm, hydro-massage pools to release lower back tension. The stone-lined basins use targeted water jets to address tight muscle groups before you transition to deeper heat. This is your entry into total health and relaxation.

Going Somewhere? Protect Your Trip (and Your Sanity)

Before you pack your bags, take a moment to cover the unexpected. From last-minute cancellations to lost luggage and surprise sprained ankles, travel insurance makes sure your adventure doesn’t come with regrets.

You might never need it - and that’s the best-case scenario. But if you do, you’ll be glad you took 60 seconds to protect yourself.

Life happens

The Infrared Zone

Unlike traditional Finnish dry saunas that heat the air around you, Drottningtorget’s dedicated Infrared Room uses deep-penetrating light waves to warm the body from the inside out. It is a highly efficient tool for reducing joint stiffness and lowering systemic cortisol.

Sitting In The Pool

One of my favorite parts of the spa involves sitting in my own little space on a marble chair that is perfectly shaped to feel fabulous. No one bothers you here. No one tries to strike up conversation. It’s you, the heat of the pool, the light of the torches and perfect comfort.

Make It Rain

The Rain Room is a lot of fun. A private room covered in showerheads and soft lighting. The pulse, direction, and intensity of the water matches the changing lights. After one cycle, you learn which ones you like and can alter it to be perfect for you.

Water massages her lower back while she lies by the fire. This is heaven.

The Ambiance

The dark surroundings give everyone privacy while allowing enough light to walk safely. Private pools, showers, salt rooms, and lounging areas are everywhere. It feels intimate and private and totally safe. It is very, very clean.

This is great people watching. Not in the creepy sense of watching other people relax but in the sheer diversity of people you may see. My personal favorite was a very (VERY) large Russian guy covered in tattoos who was accompanied by a woman who weighed maybe 90 lbs. She was tiny. He was clearly Russian mafia. She was clearly in charge. I just smiled. She and I drank champagne together (that she sent him to fetch for us).

If all of that water makes you wonder if your skin puckers - nope. You step into the dry heat of the sauna periodically and then go check out the next water treatment. I spent HOURS here and look forward to visiting again.

See you next Wednesday.
