Would You Leave Your Phone Behind for This?

From cactus hikes to floating meditation, here’s what makes this wellness retreat unforgettable.

Let’s set the scene:

You, in a fluffy white robe, holding a green juice you actually like, and realizing - somewhere between your sunrise mountain hike and your afternoon chakra balancing - that you haven’t checked your phone in 14 hours. That’s Miraval Arizona for you: equal parts fitness bootcamp, spa sanctuary, and desert retreat with just enough mysticism to make you question whether you’ve become that person who says things like, “I’m working on my heart chakra.”

I went because, frankly, I needed a sweatcation. The kind that doesn’t involve neon spin bikes blaring EDM or an instructor screaming about “shredding my excuses.” Instead, I wanted transformation delivered with a side of cactus-studded serenity.

Spoiler: It delivered. And then some.

A Place That Makes Your Calendar Irrelevant

Miraval sits on 400 acres of the Sonoran Desert just north of Tucson. There’s a wall of mountains in the distance and a stillness that seeps into your bones. You get a schedule- one of those laminated cards with your classes, spa appointments, and mealtimes - but no clocks in your room. No tipping. No digital devices in public spaces (seriously - they’ll gently scold you if you’re spotted scrolling Instagram).

At first, I thought, How will I survive without my phone? By day two, I was contemplating throwing it into a saguaro just to make the feeling last.

Movement That Feels Like a Privilege, Not a Punishment

This is where Miraval stands apart. The fitness program isn’t about earning your next meal - it’s about celebrating the fact that your body can move. Sure, there are heart-thumping HIIT classes, TRX suspension sessions, and cardio dance workouts that will leave you questioning every life choice that led to your current fitness level. But you’ll also find sunrise yoga in an open-air pavilion, floating meditation in a pool, and mindful hiking among 300-year-old cacti.

“Gentle” means try not to fall on your head

My favorite was the Gentle Aerial Yoga. I signed up for the class because I thought “gentle” meant “easy.” Turns out, it means “you’ll be suspended three feet off the floor in a swath of turquoise silk, wondering how you got here.”

The instructor had the kindest voice - like she was narrating a nature documentary - and somehow convinced us all that dangling upside down was the most natural thing in the world.

At first, I was stiff and a little panicked, convinced the hammock was plotting to dump me on the mat. But after a few minutes, I started to trust it. We did slow stretches, gentle inversions, and moments of total stillness, wrapped up like a human burrito. My spine cracked in all the right ways, and my brain finally turned down the volume.

By the time we ended in floating savasana, I felt weightless - like someone had pressed reset on every muscle and worry I brought with me.

Going Somewhere? Protect Your Trip (and Your Sanity)

Before you pack your bags, take a moment to cover the unexpected. From last-minute cancellations to lost luggage and surprise sprained ankles, travel insurance makes sure your adventure doesn’t come with regrets.

You might never need it - and that’s the best-case scenario. But if you do, you’ll be glad you took 60 seconds to protect yourself.

Food That Feels Clean (But Not Punishingly So)

Let’s be honest - wellness resorts sometimes have a problem. They serve you kale foam and quinoa air and expect you to clap. I’ve been known to sneak in Oreos and Cheese-Its, carefully hiding the empty packages in my suitcase as though carrying national secrets.

Not here. Every meal at Miraval feels vibrant and satisfying with local produce, perfectly cooked proteins, and yes, the occasional flourless chocolate cake that feels almost scandalous. They even serve the most delicious cocktails if you feel the need for ‘antioxidants’ with a splash of booze. Chocolate is easy to find and it’s delicious. They didn’t get to be the top health destination by making people hangry.

And if you really need to lean in to your inner wellness influencer, you can book a cooking demo with the chef. Watching someone turn raw vegetables into art feels both inspiring and a little insulting to my culinary skill set (I once burned boiled eggs).

It is cool and relaxing inside, away from the desert heat

The Spa Is a Whole Personality

If you’ve heard anything about Miraval, it’s probably the Life in Balance Spa. This place is basically a labyrinth of low lighting, water features, and therapists who can coax every ounce of stress out of your body. All guests can use the sauna, hot tub, pool, and other experiences at any time without purchasing a treatment.

One afternoon, I signed up for the Nurture & Nourish massage, which included herbal compresses and a scalp treatment. I emerged 90 minutes later in such a state of bliss that I nearly forgot where I was. I want to live here.

Did you look at me?

It Takes All Kinds

Of course, no paradise is perfect. A few years back, Miraval found itself in the tabloids when a certain celebrity (whose name rhymes with “Fwyneth Maltrow”) booked a private wellness retreat and proceeded to allegedly request that the staff not look directly at her. Rumor has it she also brought her own water (ionized, obviously) and insisted it be served at exactly 62 degrees Fahrenheit.

Miraval never commented publicly (classy!) but staff confirmed to me over smoothies that her “visit” has become the stuff of legend.

If you’re craving a place to sweat, exhale, and remember who you are without all the noise - Miraval is it. You don’t have to be an aspiring wellness guru or a celebrity with a water entourage. You just need a willingness to show up as yourself and maybe, just maybe, leave your phone in your suitcase.

I left with sore muscles, a clear mind, and the sneaking suspicion that I’ll be back before the year is over. 😍

See you next Wednesday.
